Golden Hurricane End Regular Season With Split In Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii - The University of Tulsa softball squad closed out the 2002 regular season campaign with a split at the University of Hawai`i on Saturday night in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tulsa won the first game of the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader 4-2, with the Rainbow Wahine recording a 3-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first game, sophomore Heather Hiar led off the game with a single up the middle. She would advance to third on Danielle Olsen's single to centerfield. Following single by Crissy Strimple to load the bases, Mimi Randolph recorded a two-out single to score Hiar. Olsen would also score when the centerfielder miss played the ball.

Hawai`i would cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third, then would tie the score in the fifth on a pair of unearned runs. The Golden Hurricane plated two more runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Junior Brandi McGuire led off the seventh with a single up the middle, then was sacrificed to second by Kyla Malone. Following a Stacey Walkingstick single, Olsen popped a double to left field to clear the bases.

Freshman Ami Day recorded her school record setting 20th win of the season. Hiar, Olsen and McGuire led the TU offensive attack with two hits apeice as seven Hurricane players recorded hits.

The second game was not much of a TU hit parade however, as Strimple picked up Tulsa's only hit with a second-inning single. Freshman Stephanie Sliepen reached base on an error in the first inning, however both baserunners were eliminated on double plays.

Senior Jenny Magill suffered only her eighth loss of the season, while the Hurricane fell to 48-16 on the season. By splitting the four game series, the Hurricane and Rainbow Wahine finish the regular season with identical 15-9 record in WAC play, tied for second place in the conference.

Both teams will watch the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday night. The show, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (CST), will be carried live on ESPNNEWS and on ncaachampionships.com.
