TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Jason Parker scored 23 points as Tulsa opened its season with a 78-49 victory over Northwestern (La.) State on Saturday.
Tulsa, which lost five seniors from a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and won the Western Athletic Conference Tournament last year, got 14 points and 10 rebounds from junior college transfer Guilherme Teichmann.
The Golden Hurricane jumped on the visitors early, racing to a 17-5 lead in the first 7:30. The Demons of the Southland Conference used a 9-0 run to get back in the game and were within 30-24 at the half.
The Hurricane opened the second half with a 11-3 run sparked by junior Jarius Glenn, the only returning starter besides Parker. Glenn had four points in that run and finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore guard Seneca Collins got his first start of his career and contributed 11 points, making three-of-five 3-pointers.
Tulsa shot 44.8 percent from the field and made seven of 18 treys, while limiting the Demons to 29.3 percent shooting (17-58).
Northwestern State scored nearly all its points inside, making just two of 12 3-pointers. Clifton Lee led the Demons (0-2) with 10 points.
Parker made six of 11 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws to go with seven rebounds and three steals.
He scored on two drives and assisted Teichmann on another in a 10-0 run that gave Tulsa a 51-31 lead with 12:50 to play. Tulsa outrebounded the visitors 48-35 and forced Northwestern State into 19 turnovers.
