Softball Splits at Compass Bank Invitational

Waco, Texas - The University of Tulsa softball team lost a pair and won one of its three games at Getterman Stadium on Saturday. TU lost to UAB 2-1, bounced back to defeat Louisiana Tech 5-1, and lost to the host-team, Baylor, 7-3 in the night cap.
The Golden Hurricane fell behind early against the Bears, giving up all seven runs in the first three innings. Sophomore Ami Day allowed five of the runs in only two innings of work as the starter. Baylor banged out 14 hits, a season-high for TU pitching. Freshman Maren Genow pitched the final four innings, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts.
All three of Tulsa's hits were doubles, as senior Brandi McGuire hit her team-high fifth of the season. Fellow senior Crissy Strimple and freshman Katie Torres also added their third doubles of the season as well.
Against Louisiana Tech, Tulsa made the most of its four hits by scoring five runs. Four runs coming in the second inning. Junior Heather Hiar led off the inning with a walk then was sacrificed to second by senior Brandi McGuire. The Hurricane loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Sophomore Stephanie Sliepen doubled to left center to clear the bases. Following a walk by senior Danielle Olsen, fellow senior Crissy Strimple singled up the middle to score Sliepen.
Tulsa would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when pinch runner Holly Reynolds scored off a wild pitch.
Freshman Maren Genow picked up the complete game victory with seven innings of work. She allowed only one run, while striking out three Lady Techsters and scattering four hits on no walks. Genow is now 5-0 on the season.
Sliepen, Strimple, Hiar and McGuire all posted hits for the Hurricane on the offensive side.
In its first game of the day, the Hurricane allowed the Blazers to score on a two-out passed ball for the game winner. After giving up a run in the top of the fourth on a two-out triple, Tulsa allowed the UAB runner to come home when Sliepen let an Ami Day pitch get by her.
Olsen led off the TU half of the inning with a home run to right center, however Tulsa could not get any closer as it stranded six runners in the final three innings.
Day was tagged with the loss, working seven innings. She struck out three batters while giving up one earned run and one ball.
Tulsa will face UAB in the first round of bracket play at 9 o'clock. The winner will face the winner of Baylor/Louisiana Tech match-up for the tournament championship at 3 p.m. The losers of each game will face off in the consolation championship at 1 p.m.
