Fairfax, Va. - The University of Tulsa softball squad took a pair of games from George Mason in the Patriots' home opener, 6-0 and 1-0, at George Mason Field in Fairfax, Va.
The Golden Hurricane used the long ball on Tuesday with two homeruns, a triple and three doubles among its 14 hits on the day. Senior Crissy Strimple hit her eighth homerun of the season, to tie the number she has all last year. In two years, she has cranked 16 homeruns, only three shy of the school record for a career. Freshman Katie Torres also hit her third homerun of the season, to win the second game.
In the first game, Tulsa drew first blood as Strimple led off the second inning with a walk. Torres followed with a double to left field to score Strimple. The Hurricane winds blew for four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Strimple led off the inning with her homerun, while Torres followed with a single. Senior Brandi McGuire singled to the shortstop with one out to give Tulsa a pair of baserunners. Freshman Julie Shafer blasted her first collegiate triple to left center to score McGuire and sophomore Stacey Walkingstick. Shafer would then score on a wild pitch.
The Hurricane then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Holly Reynolds reached on a throwing error by the pitcher then advanced on the throw. Senior Danielle Olsen singled to right field to score Reynolds.
The Patriots loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, after being hit by a pitch and a pair of singles. Sophomore Ami Day relived starter Lindsey Dyer, struck out two of the next three batters to secure the shutout and the victory.
Dyer pitched six complete innings, scattering five hits withl striking out four batters. Dyer improved her record to 2-3 on the season.
The nightcap contest turned into a pitcher's duel as freshman Maren Geno and Kathy Hryeyna shut out both offenses for six innings. The Patriots stranded seven runners on base, as the Hurricane left four runners on its own.
The Hurricane started the game where it left off in the opener, as Walkingstick walked then advanced to third on Olsen's double to left center. However TU was unable to score with one out and runners at second and third.
Both teams traded 'three-and-outs' until the bottom of the fifth. The Patriots picked up a one-out single, then recorded a second baserunner on Danielle Olsen's error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. GMU loaded the bases with just its third hit of the game. However Genow was able to get the next batter for pop up in foul territory to Torres to end the inning.
Torres led off the seventh inning with her homerun, as the Hurricane recorded its seventh shutout of the season. Genow struck out five batters in seven innings of work to earn her ninth collegiate victory.
Tulsa continues it's East Coast swing with a pair of games against James Madison on Wednesday. The Hurricane will conclude the week at the University of Virginia's Hoo's Who Invitational.
