Hurricane Split on First Day of Winthrop/Ringor Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a pair of pool games on Friday in the WInthrop/Ringor Invitational. Providence defeated the Golden Hurricane 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament. Tulsa then bounced back with a 5-1 win over host Winthrop in the night cap at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Friars scored first, with a run in the first inning as PC led off the game with a single to left field. The runner would score on a two-out single also to left field. Tulsa tied the score in the bottom of the inning, with three consecutive singles. Sophomore Stephanie Sliepen opened the barage with a single to right filed, followed by another single by senior Danielle Olsen, to right field. When Crissy Strimple singled to left field, Sliepen was able to score from second base. Senior Brandi McGuire walked to load the bases, however the Hurricane could not produce another run.
The Friars scored an unearned run in the top of the second for the game winner, as PC made a 2-1 lead last the whole game. The three hits Tulsa posted in the first inning, were the only TU hits in the game. Sophomore Lindsey Dyer pitched a complete game, striking out five batters and scattering four hits.
Against the host Eagles, Tulsa utilized four hits and five errors to post a 5-1 victory. The Hurricane scored a run in the top of the second inning as freshman Julie Shafer scored on a throwing error by the first baseman trying to throw out Holly Reynolds at second base.
Tulsa (13-10) added two more runs in the fourth inning, as sophomore Stacey Walkingstick led off the inning with a single to left field. She scored from second on a Shafer single to right field. After Shafer stole second, she avanced third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
In the sixth inning, Shafer forced her third WU error, helping TU score two more runs. Shafer reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, followed by Reynolds reacing on a error by the pitcher. Both runners scored as Sliepen reached on a fielding error by the short stop. Sliepen would then steal both second and third before an Olsen strike out would end the threat.
Freshman Maren Genow pitched her fifth complete game of the season to improve her record to 8-2. She struckout eight Eagles, while allowing only three hits and one walk.
