Harrisonburg, Va. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a pair of non-conference contests on Wednesday with the Dukes of James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. at the JMU Softball Complex. Tulsa took the opening game, 4-1, while the Dukes bounced back in game two for a 2-1 victory.
Pounding out 10 hits in the first game, sophomore Holly Reynolds led the Golden Hurricane attack with three hits. Seniors Danielle Olsen and Crissy Strimple, along with sophomore Stephanie Sliepen added two hits apeice. Sophomore Stacey Walkingstick also added a hit for the Hurricane.
Tulsa scored first with a lead-off home run by Strimple. With her ninth homer of the season, Strimple needs only two more long balls this season to tie the school record for home runs in a career. The next time TU was at-bat, the Hurricane led off the inning with a hit, and scored two runs this time. Reynolds led off the third inning with a single. After a Sliepen single, Olsen doubled to score two runs.
The Dukes closed the 3-0 gap in the bottom half of the third, as JMU posted three consecutive hits. After a leadoff double, back-to-back singles scored the run, before the Dukes grounded into an inning ending double play.
The Hurricane added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Again, Tulsa started the inning with a hit, as Olsen singled. Fellow senior Ashley Montgomery would pinch run for Olsen. She would later score on Walkingstick's fielder's choice.
Sophomore Ami Day picked up her third consecutive win in a complete-game effort. Day improved her record to 6-5 with the win.
In the second game, the Dukes were the first to get on the scoreboard. JMU posted a run in the bottom of the second inning with an unearned run. A one-out double haunted the Hurricane, as Strimple committed her ninth error on the season, enabling the run to score from second base.
Tulsa came back to tie the score in top half of the fourth inning. Back-to-back-to-back singles by freshman Katie Torres, Walkingstick and senior Brandi McGuire, plated a run for Tulsa. However, fielding errors by the Hurricane would cost TU again.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, a fielding error by Day at first base let the leadoff batter reach safely. A single followed by another error allowed the second unearned run to score, giving JMU a 2-1 victory.
Sophomore Lindsey Dyer (2-4) was saddled with the loss after striking out three. Freshman Maren Genow did record two outs in the bottom of the seventh in relief of Dyer.
Tulsa now stands at 17-11 on the season. The Golden Hurricane will conclude the week at the Hoo's Who Invitational, host by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
