Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team earned a split with Nevada on Friday night, due in large part by the hitting and running of freshman Katie Torres and Julie Shafer. The Wolf Pack took the first game of the WAC doubleheader 1-0, while TU bounced back to take the nightcap 2-0 before a crowd of 657 at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
Freshman Candice Rainwater stiffled the Hurricane hitters in the first game with a variety of off-speed pitches. She allowed only three hits, while none of the seven TU baserunners advanced past second base. The 1-0 victory was Rainwater's first shutout of the season. It was also Tulsa's first home loss in WAC play this year.
Sophomore Ami Day pitched her 17th complete game of the season in the loss. She falls to 14-12 on the season. Junior Heather Hiar, sophomore Stacey Walkingstick and Shafer each recorded a hit for the Hurricane.
Tulsa finally tallied a run in the bottom of the second inning to break a scoreless tie in the second game. Torres led off with a single up the middle, then beat a throw to second base on a sacrifice attempt by Brandi McGuire. Following a Wallkingstick bunt to advance the runners, Shafer lefted a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Torres to score.
The Hurricane added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Shafter beat out an infield single to the left side. A single by fellow freshman Kelly Miller gave the Hurricane a pair of base runners. Shafer would score on a two-out single by Hiar.
Freshman Maren Genow struck out eight Wolf Pack batters, to earn her 15th victory on the season. It was also her 13th complete game and seventh shutout of the year.
Tulsa will conclude its home schedule with a doubleheader with Nevada scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. It will be the final home games for five Hurricane seniors. Senior Day festivities will begin at aproximately 3:45 p.m.
