Denver, Colo. - The University of Tulsa softball team was picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference standings as voted on by the conference's coaches. Fresno State edged out Hawai`i for the top spot by one point. The Bulldogs will start the season ranked 21st in the USA Softball/ESPN.com preseason poll.
Sophomore Katie Torres and senior Heather Hiar were also selected on the pre-season all-conference team. Both players earned second-team All-WAC honors in 2003. Torres led the Golden Hurricane with a .314 batting average, in addition to breaking the school record for putouts in a single season. Hiar recorded 42 hits while also recording 62 putouts in left field.
The Golden Hurricane is coming off its second consecutive winning season in 2003, with a 34-29 record. Tulsa was ranked as high as 35th nationally last season, with wins over College World Series participants Oklahoma and Louisiana- Lafayette as well as a pair of victories over perennial national power Fresno State.
Tulsa will open the season on Feb. 6, in the Century Telnet Classic in San Marcos, Texas. The Hurricane will see its first action at home on Feb. 27, when TU hosts the Holiday Inn Select-Tulsa Festival.
