Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa men's basketball team opens the 2004-05 season with a preseason NIT first round game against the Wright State Raiders on Tuesday, November 16, with tip-off scheduled for 7:05 p.m., at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa returns eight lettermen and four starters from last year's team, including two double-figure scorers, senior Jarius Glenn and junior Anthony Price, and the team's top three rebounders, Glenn, Price and senior Guilherme Teichmann. All eight returning letterwinners averaged double-digit minutes, as well as each one earning at least two starting assignments.
Tulsa returns over 65 percent of its scoring output and nearly 90-percent of its rebounding from last season. Tulsa's eight returning players also shot 47-percent from field goal range a year ago, a percentage that would rank among the top-5 for Hurricane teams in the last 15 seasons.
The Hurricane won both exhibition contests this season with a 100-55 victory against Northwest Sports, and an 82-49 win over Cameron University. Red-shirt freshman guard Brett McDade led five double-figure scorers against Northwest Sports with 19 points, while Price had a game-high 22 points vs. Cameron.
Wright State is coming off of a 14-14 season and returns four letterwinners and two starters. Guard DaShaun Wood was named to the Horizon League's all-newcomer team a year ago while scoring 8.7 points and pulling down 4.2 rebounds. The other returning starter is 6'7" forward Drew Burleson, who averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. Wright State will also get a boost this year from senior Zach Williams, a 6'7" forward who transferred from Ohio State. Williams averaged 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds as a junior at OSU in the 2002-03 campaign.
The winner of the Tulsa-Wright State game will face the Arizona-San Diego winner on Thursday. Game site and time are to be determined.
Tickets, starting at $10.00, are still available. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Reynolds Center ticket office or by calling (918) 631-GoTU (4688). The game can be heard live on Newstalk 740 AM KRMG Radio.
