Denver, Colo. - Tulsa's Heather Hiar and Julie Fennell have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Both are earning their first player of the week honors. The Golden Hurricane has now earned either the player or pitcher of the week honors all four weeks this season. This is the first time TU has swept the weekly honors since joining the conference in 1996.
Hiar, a senior from Cypress, Calif., went 8-for-16 with five extra base hits for a .875 slugging percentage in helping TU win third place at the USF/Best Western All Suites Tournament in Tampa, Fla. She had a .550 on-base percentage on the weekend, including a 3-for-3 performance with two runs and two RBI against Temple. She recorded at least one hit in four of TU's five games at the tournament, earned three walks in the one game without a hit. She leads the team with 15 hits on the year.
Fennell, a freshman from Valliant, Okla., earned her first collegiate shutout with a five-inning complete game run-rule of North Carolina State. Fennell allowed only one hit in four innings of relief against No. 26 South Florida, not allowing a runner past second base.
The Golden Hurricane will open its home schedule this week by hosting the Holiday Inn Select-Tulsa Festival. The tournament will begin Friday, Feb. 27, and conclude Sunday, Feb. 29. Teams from Centenary, Drake, UAB, Texas Tech and Saint Louis will compete with Tulsa in the round-robin event.
