San Marcos, Texas - The University of Tulsa softball team won its first two games of the Century Telnet Classic in San Marcos, Texas. The Golden Hurricane defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-3, followed by a 9-4 victory over Texas Tech.

Senior Heather Hiar led the Golden Hurricane with two hits and a run scored against the Islanders, as TU tied the school record for runs in a season-opener with six. In addition to Hiar, junior Stacey Walkingstick, sophomore Katie Torres, junior Stephanie Sliepen and sophomores Kelly Miller and Julie Shafer all scored a run for the Hurricane.

Junior hurler Ami Day recorded the complete game victory by recording two strikeouts and zero walks. TAMUCC was the first of at least 11 opponents for Tulsa which participated in a NCAA Regional in 2003.

Tulsa broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. Following Sliepen single to left field, Miller reached safely on a throwing error. Freshman Angela Osbon then reached on an Islander throwing error which scored Sliepen from second base. Miller would later score on a single by Hiar.

The Islanders quickly tied the game in the top of the third on a pair of unearned runs, but TU regained the lead for good in the bottom half of the stanza. Torres led off the inning with a walk and later scored the go-ahead run off an Osbon single.

Tulsa added an insurance run in each of the final three innings as well to seal the victory.

In the second game of the day, Tulsa recorded 14 hits en route to defeating the Red Raiders for the fifth consecutive time. Tulsa has never lost the Texas Tech. All 10 Golden Hurricane hitters recorded at least on hit in the game, as TU posted the third highest hit total in school history. Shafer led the hit parade with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Julie Fennell started the contest for TU, striking out three Red Raiders and allowing only one earned run in three and two-thirds innings pitched. Sophomore Maren Genow pitched the final 10 outs for the Hurricane to earn her first victory of the season.

Down 3-2 heading into the top of the fourth inning, Tulsa exploded for five runs in the inning. Osbon opened the stanza with a single. Following a single by junior Holly Reynolds, Hiar earned a walk to load the bases with one out. A Walkingstick single scored Osbon, while a Torres single scored Reynolds and Hiar. Sophomore LeeAnn Pepper recorded her first collegiate extra-base hit with a run-scoring double. Following a Tech pitching change, Sliepen singled to score the Hurricane's final run of the inning in the form of Torres.

Tulsa added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as well.

TU will continue with two more games on Saturday. The Hurricane will face its second regional competitor, Texas State, in a 9 a.m., contest. Following a short break, Tulsa will conclude Saturday with a 1 p.m., contest against New Mexico State.
