Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Panther Spring Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. Tulsa lost its first game, 1-0, to Tennessee-Chattanooga, then posted a 3-0 victory over Birmingham Southern in the final game of the day.
Tulsa recorded only three hits against the Mocs in the first game. Junior Stephanie Sliepen earned the Golden Hurricane's first hit, a single to left field, in the fourth inning. The second was another single to left field hit by sophomore Julie Shafer in the fifth inning, with the final hit by junior Stacey Walkingstick, a single to center field, in the sixth inning.
Freshman hurler Julie Fennell pitched the full six innings, giving up four hits, one run and walking one Moc. Fennell, however, threw for six strikeouts, tallying one in each inning pitched. The loss was the fourth one-run loss to an NCAA regional team for the Golden Hurricane in 2004.
In the nightcap, TU sophomore Kelly Miller began the second inning with a homerun to left center to break open a scoreless contest. Junior Holly Reynolds and Shafer recorded singles for the Hurricane.
In the fourth inning the Hurricane added two insurance runs. Shafer singled to center field and advanced to second on an error by the first baseman. Angela Osbon walked to load the bases, as Lindsay Galloway advanced to second. Shafer then beat the throw home on a fielder's choice by Reynolds. Galloway then scored on a groundout by Heather Hiar.
Sophomore Maren Genow picked up her seventh victory of the season by striking out six Panthers in a complete-game win.
Tulsa returns to action on Saturday, facing Louisiana Monroe at 11:00 a.m., followed by Alabama A&M at 1:00 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with bracket play beginning at 9:00 a.m.
