Softball Defeats Jacksonville State, 4-2

Jacksonville, Ala. - The University of Tulsa softball team used a three-run homer by sophomore Katie Torres in the top of the first inning to help propel the Golden Hurricane to a 4-2 win over Jacksonville State at University Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Heather Hiar opened the game with a single. It was the 11th time this season the left fielder led TU's first inning off by getting on base, eighth time to record a hit in the process. Junior Stephanie Sliepen's one-out single gave TU runners at the corners with Torres up next. Torres sent Katy White's offering to centerfield for her sixth homerun of the season, it was the 10th three-run shot for the Hurricane on the year as well. Fellow sophomore Kelly Miller followed Torres with a double, while Shafer followed Miller with a single. The Gamecocks were able to settle down and get out of the inning with no further damage.
Tulsa added an insurance run to go up 4-0 in the top of the fourth, as freshman Angela Osbon led off the inning with a single. After a wild pitch moved her into scoring position, Osbon scored on a single to left field by fellow freshman Lindsay Galloway.
Jacksonville State did give the Hurricane a few tense moments early in the game as three times the Gamecocks had a runner at third base with only one out, but were unable to score. JSU did post two runs in the bottom of the sixth of TU starter Maren Genow, after loading the bases with only one out. After Genow worked out of the sixth inning jam, freshman Julie Fennell pitched the final three outs in the seventh inning to pick up her first collegiate save.
All nine Golden Hurricane hitters posted hits on the day, making it the 15th time in 31 games this season TU has posted at least nine hits in a game.
Tulsa will conclude its current nine-game road swing with the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic beginning Friday, Mar. 19, and continuing through Sunday, Mar. 21. The Hurricane will return to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 24, for a single game with Oklahoma State. TU then opens Western Athletic Conference play by hosting Louisiana Tech on Saturday, March 27.
