For each respective team selection, sports information directors nominate eligible student-athletes for Academic All-America? Team honors. All Academic All-District First Team Members are then considered as candidates for the national team ballots. The national ballot is distributed to the CoSIDA selection committee to determine the Academic All-America National Team Members for each sport (i.e. Academic All-America Football Team). The selection committee is made up of 125 CoSIDA members across the country and it selects all 12 national teams each year.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have:
* A minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average on a 4.00 scale.
* A starter or key reserve position on a varsity athletic team.
* Reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution.
* Received a nomination by the athletic department's Sports Information Director.
