Tulsa Holds on for 60-48 Win over Southern

TULSA, Okla. - Brett McDade converted 10 straight free throws in the final four minutes as the Golden Hurricane held on for a 60-48 victory over the Southern Jaguars in front of a crowd of 4,707 fans at the Reynolds Center. It was Tulsa's first double-digit victory of the season, and the 59th in 82 games at the Reynolds Center since opening seven years ago.

Tulsa improved to 4-5 on the season, while Southern dropped to 1-8 overall.

The Hurricane built a 19-point first-half lead, but the Jaguars cut it to five points at the 2:29 mark of the second half. From that point, McDade made 8-of-8 free throws to increase Tulsa's margin to 12 points.

McDade finished the game with a game-high 16 points with 13 coming on free throws, while freshman Ray Reese added 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field. Darold Corow added 10 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes for the Hurricane.

Chris Alexander led Southern with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Tulsa looked sharp in the first half for the first 16 minutes, before succumbing to Southern's pressure. In the first three minutes of the game, Tulsa took an 8-3 lead on five points from Wallace a and a three-pointer from Crow. The Hurricane built a 17-point lead as the Hurricane went on a 14-2 run over a span of 7:41 increasing its lead from 8-3 to 22-5 with 8:46 remaining in the first half.

Tulsa had its largest lead of the first half at 29-10 at the 3:51 mark, but the Jaguars finished the first period with an 8-2 run over the final 1:02 and trailed the Hurricane by 13 at the intermission, 31-18.

Tulsa's last field goal of the first half came at the 5:33 mark

In the first half, the Hurricane shot 42-percent from the field, while holding Southern to 30-percent. Tulsa scored 17 points off turnovers while the Jaguars scored six points off 13 Tulsa turnovers, with all of those points coming in the final 1:09 before intermission.

For the game, the Hurricane shot 40-percent from the field and hit for a season-best 84-percent from the free throw line on 21-of-25. The two teams combined for 51 turnovers, 26 for the Hurricane and 25 for Southern.

Tulsa goes on the road to play Eastern Michigan on Thursday night in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
