Drake Snaps Softball's Three-game Winning Streak, 5-2

Minneapolis, Minn.- - The University of Tulsa softball team could not over come a slow start against former Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake in the first round of the 2005 Metrodome Classic. The Bulldogs defeated the Golden Hurricane 5-2 in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Drake took an early lead in the bottom of the first by posting back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Following an one-out double-steal by Drake, the Bulldogs scratched a run on a ground out to second base.

The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the third, again by leading off the inning with a pair of singles. Drake also hit a pair of home runs in the third stanza to up the lead to 4-0.

Tulsa was able to cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Katie Torres led off the stanza with a walk. Fellow junior Julie Shafer and sophomore Angela Osbon followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. After senior Holly Reynold's hit into a fielder's choice, fellow senior Stacey Walkingstick recorded a two-run single to score Osbon and Shafer.

Drake (1-1) added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth for the final 5-2 margin. Walkingstick, Torres, Osbon and Shafer recorded all four of TU's hits. Junior Maren Genow started the contest for the Hurricane, striking out a pair of Bulldogs in three innings of work. Senior Ami Day pitched the final three innings, also striking out two DU hitters.

Tulsa (3-3) contines its play in the 2005 Metrodome Classic with a 4:30 p.m. contest against host Minnesota, followed by a 7 p.m. contest against Western Illinois.
