Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a pair of contests at the 2005 Metrodome Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. TU defeated the host Golden Gophers, 1-0, before falling to Western Illinois, 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the first contest, Tulsa stranded 11 base runners. Eight of the 11 were left in scoring position, while TU left the bases loaded in three innings. Senior Holly Reynolds and junior Katie Torres combined for four of TU's five hits. Freshman Lindsey Towers picked up the Hurricane's fifth hit. Torres also led Tulsa with a pair of TU's five walks.
In a season that is beginning to be named as "The Season of Cardiac Comebacks", the Golden Hurricane added another chapter by scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom half of the seventh, Tower recorded her second double of the season with one out. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, the Gophers opted to intentionally walk Torres and Sara Dyer to load the bases. Senior Stephanie Sliepen recorded the game-winning RBI by drawing the bases loaded walk to score Tower from third base.
Sophomore Julie Fennell posted her first win of the season in the complete game effort. The Valliant, Okla., native struck out five Gophers while allowing three hits and two walks.
In the second game, the Westerwinds used a two-run third inning to take a one-run lead then scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 3-2 victory over the Hurricane. Tulsa scored first with a run in the top of the second, as Sliepen led off the stanza with a walk. Following a sacrifice by Dyer, Sliepen would score on a double by sophomore Lindsay Galloway.
Down 2-1, Tulsa tied the contest with a run in the fifth inning. Tower hit her first collegiate triple with one down, then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Stacey Walkingstick. Back-to-back hits by Torres and Sliepen were a pair of seven baserunners left on base by TU in the game.
WIU then scored in the fifth on a walk followed by a pair of wild pitches.
Senior Ami Day was saddled with her first loss of the season. She went five innings allowing only one hit and two earned runs. She also struck out three WIU batters. Fellow senior Lindsey Dyer pitched the final inning for the Hurricane.
Tulsa (4-4) will continue the classic with an evening show down with former Missouri Valley Conference foe Northern Iowa.
