Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team won its first game of the day with a 5-3 victory over Indiana. In the final game of the day, TU lost to Akron, 7-5 on the strength of a pair of two-run homeruns in the final two innings by the Zips.

Tulsa scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Lindsey Tower led off the TU half with a double to right center field. After a sacrifice bunt by senior Stacey Walkingstick, junior Katie Torres reached base when the Hoosier shortstop dropped a pop fly. Senior Stephanie Sliepen hit a two-out double to right field scoring both Torres and Tower.

Indiana answered with two runs of its own in the top of the second. Freshman Janetta Deaven was awarded first base with two outs, after she was ruled to be hit by the pitch before she started her swing at the ball. Five pitches later freshman Kari Bettenbrock was awarded her first collegiate home run after her hit was ruled to just curve around the right side of the left field foul pole.

Tulsa regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Torres reached base on an infield single, then scored on a double by freshman Sara Dyer. Indiana tied the score again with a run in the top of the fourth.

After both teams stranded one runner apiece over the next two half innings, Sara Dyer reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Lindsay Galloway then posted her third home run of the season to give the Hurricane a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore pitched the final four innings of the game to pick up her third win of the season. She struck out three while allowing only two hits and no walks. Senior Lindsey Dyer started the contest for the Hurricane, allowing only three hits in three innings of work. She also struck out one Hoosier, while allowing no walks.

Tower led the Hurricane hitters with three hits, while Sliepen also posted a pair of hits for TU. Walkingstick, Dyer, Galloway and junior Julie Shafer also added a hit apeice.

Akron jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the nightcap, by scoring three unearned runs in the first inning. Two of the first Zip batters reached base due to errors by TU fielders. Senior Holly Reynolds, who had broken a string of 86 games with out an error on Friday, dropped a fly ball to start the inning. Following a strikeout, Galloway threw wildly to first allowing Akron's first run to score. After drawing a full-count walk, the Zips then scored two more runs on a two-out double.

The score remained 3-0 until the fourth inning. Dyer led off the TU fourth with a single up the middle. Following a one-out walk by Galloway, sophomore Angela Osbon singled down the left field line to load the bases. Shafer drove in TU's first run by drawing a walk. The Hurricane could not talk further advantage of the situation, however, as the next two batters were called out on strikes to end the threat.

Akron used a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to increase its lead to 5-1. Tulsa tied the score at 5-5 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Osbon hit her first homerun of the season with a shot to left field. Shafer then walked, followed by an infield single by Reynolds.
