Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa Head Basketball Coach Doug Wojcik stayed in the family when announcing his first appointment to the Golden Hurricane coaching staff. Wojcik named his younger brother, Dave, as an assistant coach.
A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, the younger Wojcik brings 11 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Hurricane staff. He has coached under some of the best coaches in college basketball, including Skip Prosser, Lefty Driesell and Don DeVoe.
He comes to Tulsa following one season as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton.
"David has coached under some very successful coaches during his tenure. He's coached on the Division I level, Division II and on the high school level, while winning two state titles in those two years as a head coach. He's an experienced coach. He's very organized, knowledgeable and has a great way of teaching the game, and still has the balance to have a great relationship with the players," said the older Wojcik.
It's the first time the two brothers have coached together. "Our paths are similar, but we've never been together in the same town since I left home for college and that was 23 years ago," added Wojcik.
Wojcik began his coaching career in 1991-92 under Driesell at James Madison. In his only year there, JMU posted a 21-11 record, won the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and played in the NIT.
After that, he spent one season (1992-93) as an assistant coach at West Liberty State College, before moving to his alma mater, Loyola (Md.) College. At Loyola, he coached under Skip Prosser for one season and helped the school win the MAAC title and advance to the school's first NCAA Tournament. Wojcik followed Prosser to Xavier University, where he coached for three seasons (1994-97) helping the Muskateers advance to two NCAA Tournaments.
Wojcik then made the move back to Loyola, where he spent three more years (1997-2000) as an assistant coach.
In 2000, Wojcik returned to his hometown and became the athletics director at his prep alma mater, Wheeling Central Catholic High School. A year later, Wojcik took over as the head basketball coach and coached the team to back-to-back state championships in 2002 and 2003 with a two-year combined record of 42-13. In 2003-04, Wojcik returned to the collegiate ranks at Navy under DeVoe.
As a prep athlete, Wojcik was a McDonald's Honorable Mention High School All-America selection while playing point guard for Wheeling Central Catholic. He led his team to three consecutive appearances in the West Virginia AA State Championship game, including winning the state title in 1987.
Wojcik went on to play collegiately at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland and became the first player in school history to record a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against St. Francis in the 1988-89 season.
Wojcik, 36, earned his bachelor's degree in education from Loyola College in 1991.
He and his wife, Heather, have a five-year-old son, Jake.
