Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Hawai`i softball team used four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over The University of Tulsa at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Tuesday. A crowd of 286 watched the Wahine sweep the series with TU, as UH took the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, 3-0.
Five Golden Hurricane players recorded hits in the night's first game. Senior Stephanie Sliepen, junior Kelly Miller, sophomore Lindsay Galloway and freshmen Lindsey Tower and Sara Dyer all recorded singles for the Hurricane. Junior Maren Genow pitched a scoreless five innings before giving up three runs, two coming with two outs, in the sixth inning. Senior Lindsey Dyer pitched the final four outs for TU. With the loss, Genow fell to 6-5 on the season. The game also marked the first time since April 28, 2003, a span of 116 games that the TU pitchers did not record at least one strike out.
The Wahine scored first in the nightcap with a run in the top of the first. UH left the bases loaded after scoring the run on a bases-loaded walk. TU opened its half of the inning with a bunt single by junior Julie Shafer. Walkingstick's sacrifice attempt was nullified when she was called out for interfering with a fielder while the Wahine first baseman was applying the tag, sending Shafer back to first. Senior Stephanie Sliepen then doubled to center field, advancing Shafer to third. However, TU was unable to get on the board.
Tulsa ended its scoreless streak in the second inning. Galloway led off with a full-count walk. She would score on double by sophomore Angela Osbon. The run not only tied the game, it snapped a 27-inning scoreless streak for the Hurricane.
The Hurricane added a run in the third inning. Junior Katie Torres recorded her team-leading 11th double of the season with two outs. She then scored on Tower's 10th double of the season. Tower tied Osbon for the most doubles in a single-season by a freshman. As a team, TU hit four doubles in the game, missing a school record by one.
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of sixth inning, despite the Wahine getting back-to-back; two-out singles in the top half of the inning. Sara Dyer led off TU's half with a single. Senior Holly Reynolds pinch ran for the younger Dyer. She advanced to second on a sacrifice by Miller. Reynolds then scored on a ground out by Shafer.
After working her self out of the sixth inning jam, TU starter Julie Fennell began the seventh inning in the circle for the Hurricane. After getting the first out, a walk and a single were followed by fly out. With two outs and a 1-2 count, UH's Ashley Ruff this a two-run triple to right center to tie the game. After a hit batter, the Wahine scored two more runs when Osbon's throw to end the inning sailed past Torres at first base. Nine batters went to the plate for the Wahine, giving UH an improbable 5-3 lead.
Torres reached first on a fielding error by the Hawai`i shortstop in the bottom of the seventh, however TU was unable to score.
Osbon led the TU hitters, with a 3-for-3 performance. Sliepen also posted two of TU's nine hits. Fennell was saddled with the loss, despite striking out seven Wahine batters in six and two-third innings of work.
Tulsa will look to bounce back with a non-conference doubleheader at Wichita State on Thursday, April 14. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., in Wichita, Kan. It will also kick-off a nine-game road trip for the Hurricane, which will last the rest of the month of April.
