Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa First-Year Head Basketball Coach Doug Wojcik announced his first signing for the Golden Hurricane basketball program. Bartlesville High School's Sam Mitchell signed a national letter-of-intent with Tulsa today.
Mitchell, a 6'9", 225-pound center, helped lead his Bartlesville (Okla.) High School team to an overall 25-3 record and a Class 6A state runner-up finish.
As a senior, Mitchell averaged 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds, while shooting 59-percent from the field. He ranked seventh among all Oklahoma Class 6A players in field goal percentage, and was second on the team in assists with a 2.1 average. Mitchell had season-highs of 30 points and 12 rebounds, both coming against Wewoka his senior season.
"We're excited to have Sam join our Tulsa basketball family," said Wojcik. "Sam is a post player with great potential. He has good athleticism and great strength. He's an extremely committed student-athlete who played for a very good high school coach and played on winning teams."
"Sam is an outstanding student-athlete who will be a good representative of The University of Tulsa," added Wojcik.
Mitchell earned honorable mention all-state accolades from the Tulsa World as a senior. He was also selected to the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association (OBCA) Academic all-state team. During his senior campaign, Mitchell earned third-team all-Frontier Conference honors and was named to the Class 6A state all-tournament second-team and also received second-team merits at the Tournament of Champions.
He has been chosen to play in the Faith Seven game, which features Oklahoma vs. Texas senior all-stars, in Shawnee, Oklahoma on June 11.
"I believe that Sam will turn out to be a better college player than he was a high school player," said Bartlesville Head Coach Tim Bart. "Sam has a much better understanding of the game now and has developed more than any other player that I've ever coached. His potential is unlimited because of his great work ethic and his desire to be a player."
