Denver, Colo. - The University of Tulsa softball team won its final nine games of the season to finish third in the final Western Athletic Conference standings. The squad's effort was rewarded by the league's coaches as five members earned All-WAC honors. Sophomore Angela Osbon along with freshmen Lindsey Tower and Sara Dyer were named to the first team, while juniors Katie Torres and Julie Shafer earned spots on the second team. This season marked the sixth consecutive season the Golden Hurricane had at least one member on the conference's first-team and second straight season with three on the first team.
Osbon was one of five starters on the TU roster to hit .300 or better during conference play. The second baseman recorded 15 hits during WAC games and committed only one error in 55 chances. She finished the season with a nine -game hitting streak as well, hitting at a .423 clip during that span. Osbon, a native of Glendale, Ariz., recorded 102 putouts on the season to go along with 78 assists. She was also a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases on the year. She posted six multi-hit games in addition to recording three RBI against Wisconsin.
Tower and Dyer were the first freshmen to ever earn first team honors for the Golden Hurricane, as TU had two of the four freshmen to be named to the first-team. Tower led the team with a .313 batting average and 63 hits on the year. During WAC play she posted a .386 average with 22 hits and six doubles, all of which were team highs for league games. Along with Osbon, Tower finished the season with a nine-game hitting streak. Going 14-for-26 with four doubles and a .538 batting average, she helped lead the Hurricane to nine victories. Tower led the team with 15 multi-hit games and recorded five multi-RBI games. Defensively, she did not commit an error in right field during all of WAC play. She posted 17 putouts and recorded one assist as well.
Dyer recorded a .354 batting average during WAC play and a .288 average overall. Her four home runs were second on the team, one of which was a game-winning grand slam against Louisiana Tech. In that same game, she set a school record for RBI in an inning with five, as she came to bat with the bases loaded twice in the same inning. She recorded 10 multi-hit games this season and six multi-RBI games. Playing in the designated player spot for most of the season, Dyer did record two putouts and nine assists, with no errors, at third base this season.
Torres and Shafer are repeat performers on the All-WAC teams. Last season, Torres earned first-team honors while Shafer was named to the second-team. In 2005, Torres finished the season with a .303 batting average to become only the second Hurricane hitter to finish three consecutive seasons above .300. Her six home runs also topped the team for the second year in a row. With a .503 slugging percentage on the season, Torres also became the first TU slugger to post three consecutive seasons with a .500 or better slugging percentage.
Shafer ended the season with a team-best 11-game hitting streak. During that span, she hit for a .447 batting average and scored 10 times. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native posted 10 multi-hit games, including a three-hit performance against Nevada. Shafer recorded a .367 batting average during WAC play with a team-high 22 hits. She was one of nine players in the WAC to finish the season without committing an error, while leading the conference outfielders with 77 putouts on the season.
