Tulsa, Okla. - Tulsa handed the Tulane Green Wave a 38-3 loss as 22 Hurricane seniors played their final collegiate home game in front of 15,502 fans at Skelly Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Hurricane used a balanced offensive attack as eight players gained rushing yards and the Hurricane gained 458 total yards, while the Tulsa defense held Tulane to 152 yards. Paul Smith completed 14-of-20 passes for 215 yards and one TD, and Courtney Tennial gained 49 yards and two TDs on the ground.
Tulsa ends the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and 5-3 C-USA mark, while Tulane ends at 4-8 and 2-6 in C-USA.
Tulsa took its opening drive 77 yards in nine plays for a 7-0 lead, as Brandon Diles carried the final one-yard for the touchdown.
Jarod Tracy bettered his previous career-long field goal with a 50-yarder at the 8:59 mark of the second quarter, giving the Hurricane a 10-0 lead.
After the Hurricane defense held Tulane to -6 yards, the Hurricane capitalized on a 23-yard punt return by Idris Moss to started the drive at the Tulane 29-yard line. Tulsa scored five plays later as Tennial ran in from two yards out to give the Hurricane a 17-0 lead.
In the second quarter, there were 37 snaps from scrimmage and 32 were in Tulane territory. The five snaps in Tulsa territory were all taken by the Hurricane.
At intermission, Tulsa held a 209 to 68-yard advantage in total offense. The Hurricane had 128 passing yards and 81 on the ground, while the Green Wave gained 26 yards on the ground and 42 yards through the air.
Tulane took the opening second-half drive 67 yards in 18 plays and settled for a 30-yard field goal by Ross Thevenot to put its first points on the scoreboard. On that drive, the Green Wave gained just one-yard less than gaining the entire first half.
Tulsa took the subsequent possession 57 yards in eight plays as Tennial scored his second touchdown of the game with a five-yard run to put the Hurricane ahead 24-3.
The Hurricane added two fourth quarter touchdowns. Cody Madison scored his first career touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Paul Smith, while David Johnson replaced Smith at quarterback and led the Hurricane on a 67-yard, seven-play drive. Johnson ran the final one-yard for the touchdown.
