Santa Barbara, Calif. - The University of Tulsa softball team nearly threw as many mud pies as softballs on the first day of the Commercial Capital Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. TU showered Cal State Northridge with a downpour of five runs in the first inning, then Mother Nature showered the field with a downpour of rain. The game was finally called in the top of the seventh inning with the Golden Hurricane holding a 7-5 lead over the Matadors.
All nine of the Hurricane hitters reached base in the first inning of the contest. Freshman Brooke Smart opened the game with a walk. After senior Julie Shafer reached on a fielder's choice, fellow senior Katie Torres started a string of five consecutive hits. With runners at first and second, sophomore Sara Dyer posted her first home run of the year, a shot to left field. Junior Kelli McGlasson followed the homer with a double to right center, then freshman Jessica Barr posted a single down the leftfield line. McGlasson scored on Barr's hit. A single by junior Angela Osbon and a fielding error on a grounder by senior Kelly Miller loaded the bases for TU with one out. Junior Lindsay Galloway singled home Barr for the fifth run of the inning.
Senior Maren Genow was nearly flawless through the first three innings. After giving up a hit to the first batter of the game, Genow struck out five of the next 10 hitters. Then the rains came. After a delay, Genow struggled with the wet conditions. This allowed CSUN to tie the score in the top of the fifth. Junior Julie Fennell pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief for her second win of the season. Genow struck out seven batters on the day, with Fennell adding one in the sixth.
McGlasson was the big hitter for the Hurricane with three hits, including a double. Dyer also posted two hits, as a total of 10 Hurricane hitters recorded at least one hit. Shafer scored twice for TU, while extending her hitting streak to 16 games.
"Despite the rain and being really wet," said TU head coach John Bargfeldt, "we played well today. Maren looked really good until the rains came. We were able to jump out in the first inning and get the bats going early. Hopefully the weather will help us build on that momentum tomorrow."
Tulsa's final game of the day, against Long Beach State, was washed out by the rain. Saturday's schedule will begin with TU and LBSU playing at Noon at the UCSB Diamond. Tulsa and Rider will play at Girsh Park at 5:00 p.m., time permitting. Sunday's schedule has also changed, with the Hurricane playing the host Gauchos at 11 a.m., not the Aztecs of San Diego State as originally scheduled.
