Tallahassee, Fla.- The University of Tulsa softball team lost its first extra-inning contest of the season, then bounced back to end a four-game skid with a win in its second game of the day. The Golden Hurricane went overtime against Indiana, the third such game of the year for TU, before falling 6-4 in eight innings. In its second game, Tulsa handed Appalachian State its first loss in the last seven games, 7-3.
Against the Hossiers, sophomore Sara Dyer was TU's big hitter with a 2-for-4 performance, including her second home run of the season. The Hurricane blew out to a 4-1 lead after the fourth inning, however could not sustain the momentum.
Indiana scored first with a solo home run by Kim Richards in the top of the second inning. Dyer opened TU's second inning with a single to center field. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to second, she would score on a single to right field by freshman Jessica Barr. Barr would then score on a two-out single by senior LeeAnne Pepper to give TU a 2-1 advantage.
Tulsa added a run in the third inning on Dyer's homer, then picked up its fourth run in the bottom of the fourth. Pepper would lead off the bottom half with a double down the leftfield line. After a sacrifice bunt, she would score from third on a single by Smart.
The Hoosiers posted seven of their nine hits in the final four innings, including a two-run homer in the top of the eighth.
In addition to Dyer's two hits, Pepper also recorded a pair of hits for the Hurricane. Smart, junior Kelli McGlasson and Barr also had hits for TU.
In its final contest of the day, Tulsa exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 tie. Freshman Brooke Smart hit her third homer of the year during a 2-for-3 performance. Senior Katie Torres also posted a pair of hits for TU in the contest. Dyer was 1-for-1 with three walks as well.
Tulsa scored first for the 12 time this season, with TU winning 11 of those contests. A one-out single by freshman Stephanie Chomicki set the stage for the Hurricane. Back-to-back singles by senior Kelly Miller and Barr, allowed Chomicki to score the opening run.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning. A leadoff single by Diana Cook followed by a sacrifice bunt and a single by Ashley Gaston moved Cook to third. She would score on a sacrifice fly by Kasey Motsinger tie the game at 1-1.
Dyer opened the TU sixth with her third walk of the game. McGlasson attempted a sacrifice bunt, but when the second baseman dropped the throw, it gave TU a pair of runners. A walk drawn from freshman Stephanie Chomicki loaded the bases for the Hurricane. A pair of sacrifice flys from junior Lindsay Galloway and senior Kelly Miller scored a pair of runs. Smart closed out the scoring with three-run homerun.
Freshman Katie Lee improved to 2-1 on the year with the complete-game win over Appalachian State, while senior Maren Genow was tagged with the loss against Indiana to fall to 6-3.
Tulsa will conclude pool play on Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. game against Troy. Bracket play will begin later that afternoon with the top two teams from each of the four pools moving to the Gold Bracket. The bottom two clubs will play in the Silver Bracket.
