Golden Hurricane Falls To Stanford in First NCAA Game

Fresno, Calif. - The University of Tulsa softball team was not nervous against No.7 Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Region VI. However, it was the Cardinal that struck first blood then hit the gas for a 8-0 victory at Bulldog Diamond in Fresno.
Tulsa threatened in the first with a pair of walks by senior Julie Shafer and sophomore Sara Dyer. But a diving catch by the Cardinal's Anna Beardman on a line drive by Kelli McGlasson thwarted the threat.
Stanford also had a baserunner in scoring position in the first as Catalina Morris led off the inning with a walk. Senior Maren Genow was able to pitch out of the trouble stranding Morris at third. Genow also pitched out of trouble in the second inning as back-to-back infield singles by Stanford's Missy Penna and Michelle Smith gave the Cardinal a pair of runners.
Tulsa had base runners in every inning, including the lead off runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
A leadoff single by Lauren Lappin in the bottom of the fifth helped start another Cardinal rally. After a strikeout, Penna recorded her second hit of the contest. A walk from Smith loaded the bases for Stanford. Catcher Erin Howe singled in Lappin and Penna, while a double from Tricia Aggabao scored pinch runner Shoney Hixson.
After a TU pitching change Beardman doubled down the right field line to score Howe. A walk by Morris loaded the bases once again for the Cardinal. Aggabao scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Jackie Rinehart to make the score 6-0, Stanford. Two consecutive hit batters scored a seventh run for the Cardinal, then Penna singled to left center for Stanford's final run.
Genow fell to 15-10 on the season after allowing a season-high 10 hits. She also struck out a pair of Stanford hitters. Senior Katie Torres and freshman Jessica Barr posted Tulsa's two hits on the night.
The Golden Hurricane will face Cal State Fullerton in Saturday's first elimination game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
