Hattiesburg, Miss. - Freshman Brooke Smart led off the fourth inning with a solo home run that sparked The University of Tulsa softball team to a 4-0 shutout over Southern Miss at USM Softball Complex on Sunday. The win, combined with a UAB loss at UTEP, secured TU's first ever conference regular season title and the No. 1-seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
Smart's solo shot in the fourth also broke up a perfect game being pitched by USM's Lacey Gros. Tulsa followed its fourth with two more runs in the top of the fifth as well. Freshman Jessica Barr, the league's top hitter during C-USA games, led off the stanza with a walk. Junior Angela Osbon followed with a single to left field. After a sacrifice bunt from senior Kelly Miller, Barr scored on a single from junior Lindsay Galloway. When Galloway stole second, Osbon was able to score on a throwing error by the USM catcher.
Tulsa then picked up an insurance run in the sixth. Junior Kelli McGlasson singled to right field then advanced to third when Sara Dyer got thrown out at the plate. McGlasson scored TU's final run on a single by Osbon.
Senior Maren Genow picked up the win, improving to 14-9 on the season, by striking out three Golden Eagle batters and scattering three hits.
Tulsa will face the winner of the UAB/East Carolina first round match up at next week's tournament. TU is scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
