MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- Freshman Jamel McLean's 13-point, 11-rebound performance wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped its comeback bid 58-56 to the Tulane Green Wave on Thursday night at the FedEx Forum. Senior Charles Ramsdell added 11 points and four rebounds for the Hurricane.
Tulane advanced to the C-USA Tournament semifinals against Memphis on Friday afternoon. The other semifinal game features Rice and Houston. Tulsa, still keeping its' hopes alive for an NIT bid, has posted a 20-11 record.
"It's a disappointing loss for us. We did not do a very good job ourselves. We started the game in a very poor fashion and had too many turnovers to start the first half. It was a hard fought game, and very disappointing," said Tulsa's Doug Wojcik.
Tulsa suffered a blow in the first half when C-USA all-freshman team selection Ben Uzoh went out with a game-ending knee injury at the 12-minute mark.
Tulsa closed the gap to one point at 54-53 on a Brett McDade layup at the 1:06 mark, but missed a free throw after a foul on the play. Tulane's Robinson Louisme had a layup at the 0:38 mark to make the score 56-53. Trailing by three points, Tulane's Kevin Sims was fouled with 0:14 remaining in the game. Sims was awarded two free throws, but an error by the official scorekeeper should have given him just a one-and-one. The officials gave Sims the ball for two shots, but after a miss, the officials realized the error and thus gave Tulane the ball because the possession arrow was in their favor.
A sluggish first half for the Hurricane resulted in a 31-23 deficit, but it could have been worse if it was not for McDade's half-court swish.
The Hurricane came out in the second half and out-scored Tulane 10-3 in the first five minutes to cut the lead to 34-33 with 15:15 remaining in the game. Tulsa took its only lead at 43-42 on a Rod Earls jumper at the 9:57 mark. The game was tied at 47 and 51, but the Hurricane could never get the lead back. Ramsdell's three-pointer at the 0:06 mark cut a five-point Tulane lead to 58-56. Ramsdell had another opportunity with a near half-court shot at the buzzer but it fell short.
Tulsa, a 71-percent shooting team from the free throw line, shot just 50-percent from the free throw line and 37-percent from the field.
Tulane's Kevin Sims had a game-high 15 points and 11 points from David Gomez.
