Tulsa Drops Pair to Shockers on the Road

Wichita, Kan. - The University of Tulsa softball team (23-22) dropped a pair of games on the road to Wichita State (23-24), falling in game one 9-1, followed by a 5-4 heartbreaker in the nightcap.

Lauren Lindsay finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a pair of RBI and two runs scored.

Julie Fennell suffered the loss in game one, tossing a complete game and giving up nine runs, but striking out eight.

Katie Lee was hit with the loss in game two, also throwing a complete game giving up five runs, four earned, and striking out three.

The Shockers opened up scoring when Lindsie Mitts singled home Erin Peters to give WSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Hurricane answered in the top of the fifth when Lindsay connected on a home run over the right field wall to knot the score at 1-1.

WSU regained the lead when Brooke Usher doubled home, Mitts and Katie McGeeney to go up 3-1. The Shockers added to their lead later in the bottom of the fifth when Cynthia Verhulst connected on a three-run homer to put TU down 6-1.

After Tulsa was unable to close the gap in the top of the sixth, WSU added three more runs in the bottom half to end the game at 9-1.

In the second game of the evening, the Shockers again jumped in front early with Verhulst singling home a run, followed by a two-RBI single by Stephanie De La Riva to put the Hurricane down 3-0.

WSU added another run in the fourth to go up 4-0, but TU answered in the top of the fifth when Lindsay singled home Angela Osbon to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Hurricane continued to cut into the Shocker lead in the top of the sixth inning. Stephanie Chomicki singled home Vice, and later scored on an Angela Osbon double to trim the gap to 4-3.

Tulsa evened the score in the top of the seventh when Lindsay scored on a Sara Dyer sacrifice fly, making the score 4-4.

The Shockers, however, wasted no time in grabbing the win with McGeeney connected on the first pitch on the bottom of the seventh inning and putting it over the right field wall to give WSU the 5-4 win.
