Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Tulsa softball team posted its first series sweep of the season in grand fashion with an 8-5 victory over Memphis on Sunday. The Golden Hurricane posted 14 hits on the day, the fifth consecutive game TU has reached double figures in hits.
Tulsa got on the board first with a pair of runs in the first and second innings. Senior Kelli McGlasson drew a one-out walk then scored after back-to-back singles from junior Sara Dyer and freshman Jackie Lawrence. The second stanza started like the first with a leadoff out. Senior Angela Osbon then hit a double down the leftfield line. After a groundout, freshman Lauren Lindsay ripped a single through the right side to score Osbon and give TU a 2-0 lead.
Also handling the pitching duties for the Hurricane, Lawrence found herself in some trouble in the bottom of the second in the pitching circle. After retiring the first two batters, she gave up back-to-back singles to the Tigers. She was able to get out of the inning with a ground ball.
The Hurricane added to its lead with three more runs in the top of the third inning. Dyer led off the stanza with an infield-single, followed by a spinning bunt single by Lawrence. Both runners scored on a double by sophomore Brooke Smart. She would score one batter later on a single from junior Lindsey Tower. A fifth TU hit in the inning, a single through the left side from Osbon, warranted a pitching change for the Tigers and ended the TU offensive at 5-0.
Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the third with a trio of unearned runs. The score remained 5-3 in TU's favor until the sixth when the Hurricane scored three times. After the first two batters got out, Tulsa posted four consecutive singles, starting with an infield hit by Lawrence. She would score from second on a single from Smart. Freshman Ashlee Lubniewski singled to leftfield, allowing Vanessa Vice and Smart for an 8-3 TU lead.
The Tigers hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the final 8-5 margin.
Lawrence led the TU hitters with a 3-for-3 performance, including a run scored and a RBI. Lubniewski was 2-for-2 as well. Dyer, Smart and Osbon also finished with two hits for the Hurricane.
Tulsa travels to Wichita State on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader, before hosting Marshall for a three-game C-USA series on Saturday and Sunday.
