Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa won its share of individual hardware on the eve of the 2007 Conference USA Championship presented by Coca-Cola. The Golden Hurricane placed one player on the All-Conference USA First Team and two other players on the All-Freshman Team. Tulsa also had two players voted to the All-C-USA Academic Team.
Junior Sara Dyer earned her third First-Team honor as she was one of three first basemen to make the squad. Leading the nation in doubles this season, Dyer is ranked among the top-10 in 14 different categories of the C-USA offensive and defensive stats. She has broken school records for RBI and doubles this season, while also breaking the career doubles mark. She is seven hits away from the single season mark at TU and five RBI away from the career mark.
Dyer doesn't just get the job done on the field, but in the classroom as well. The communications major was also voted to the All-C-USA Academic Team as well. That squad is voted on by the league's sports information contacts and requires at least a 3.23 GPA. Heading into the spring semester, Dyer sports a 3.92 grade point average.
Also making the all-academic team was sophomore Stephanie Chomicki. The elementary education major has a 3.70 GPA and has been a C-USA academic honoree both seasons in a TU uniform. Chomicki had a break-out season in 2007, hitting at a .320 clip. In 2006, the Overland Park, Kan. native posted only three hits and a .091 batting average. This season, she has exploded for 47 hits and scored 29 runs for the Hurricane.
The two rookies to make the all-freshman squad were Jackie Lawrence and Vanessa Vice. Lawrence became the first pitcher in TU history to pitch two no-hitters in the same season with a 2-0 win over Oklahoma and a 1-0 victory over Texas-Arlington. The win over OU was the first loss of the season for the Sooners who had won their previous 23 games.
Vice currently ranks 10th in C-USA for batting average and tied for sixth in doubles. She ranks second on the squad in batting average with .333, even though she missed the first seven games of the season with an injury. She has started 45 games this season.
