Los Angeles, California - Senior Ray Reese enjoyed his homecoming with game-highs of 16 points and nine assists as Tulsa posted a 79-45 victory over Loyola Marymount in front of a sparse crowd of 1,458 fans at Gersten Pavilion.
Tulsa improved to 7-4 on the season, and garnered its first road win in three tries this season.
The Hurricane shot 56-percent from the field and knocked down a season-high 13 three-pointers en route to its 34-point victory. Tulsa also had a season-high 25 assists, while also holding a 14 rebound advantage.
Reese, who played at nearby Westchester High School, scored eight points in each half as he knocked down 50-percent from the field and three-point range. He was 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range.
Juniors Ben Uzoh and Jerome Jordan added 16 and 15 points, while sophomores Justin Hurtt and Glenn Andrews talied 11 and 10 points, respectively. Uzoh added five assists and Andrews six assists.
"It was a great job of sharing the basketball," said Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik. "We shot 17 threes at the half, and we talked about not getting lulled into shooting the three in the second half, but we did make extra passes and took step-in jump shots. I think Loyola forces you to shoot the three with their 2-3 zone.
"I was glad to see the way we made the extra pass and took good three-point shots," added Wojcik.
After Jarrod Dubois' jumper gave the home team a 9-7 lead at the 14:52 mark of the first half, it would be the last lead for the Lions. Uzoh's three-pointer 40 seconds later started the Hurricane on an 11-0 run. Another Uzoh trey, a three-pointer by Reese and a two-point basket by Andrews put the Hurricane ahead 18-9 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Tulsa continued its run, holding the Lions to just four points in the next five minutes, while the Hurricane tallied 15 more points to take a 33-13 lead with 6:02 remaining in the first half.
The Hurricane held a 18-point lead at the intermission, 40-22. At halftime, Tulsa had already knocked down 8-of-17 treys for 47-percent.
The Hurricane increased its lead to 20 points on a Jordan layup to start the second half, and would only dip under the 20-point barrier once the rest of the game. Tulsa's largest margin was 36 points twice in the second half, coming with 2:06 and 0:55 remaining in the contest.
Tulsa will return to the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Tuesday night to host Texas-Arlington, a team who lost by only three points to Baylor on Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 pm, and tickets for as low as $10.00 are still available.
