Huntington, W. Va. - The University of Tulsa softball team recorded a milestone on Sunday, while also moving up in the Conference USA standings. TU recorded eight hits against Marshall pitching while also scoring two runs in a 2-1 victory over the Thundering Herd. The win was TU's 30th of the season, marking the seventh consecutive year the Golden Hurricane has won at least 30 games. The win also moved TU into third place in C-USA standings, a half game ahead of Marshall with three conference games left. Marshall is done with its league schedule.
After TU went quietly in the first inning, Marshall did not. The Herd loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single. However, freshman Jordan Kinard was able to get out of the jam without giving up a run for the Hurricane.
The game remained scoreless through the third inning, even with TU loading the bases in the top of the inning with two outs. In the top of the fourth, sophomore Vanessa Vice led off the stanza with a single to left field. She would go to third base on an one-out single to right centerfield by freshman Kelly Chapman. Senior Lindsay Tower's fly ball to right field was deep enough to score Vice from third base for the first run of the game.
TU would add another run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by sophomore Lauren Lindsay. The homer is Lindsay's 13th of the season, only two shy of tying the school record of 15 set by Katie Torres during the 2004 campaign. For her career, Lindsay now has 21 home runs in two seasons which is the second most in school history. She passed current senior Sara Dyer at 20 homers and trails only Torres' 37 career long balls.
After the home run, TU loaded the bases for the second time in the contest but could not scratch across another urn. The Hurricane loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth inning, only to strand all three runners on base. Marshall was able to get a run out of a loaded bases situation in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single, MU got back-to-back one-out singles to load the bases. The next batter was hit by a pitch to produce the Herd's only run of the day.
Kinard picked up her 12th win of the season for the Hurricane in a complete game effort. She struck out seven Herd hitters and scattered six hits in the contest. Tulsa improves to 30-21 on the year, 11-10 in C-USA play. Marshall falls to 24-28 overall, 11-11 in league games.
Tulsa will close out the regular season with a midweek double header against former Missouri Valley Conference foe Wichita State. Game time for the Shockers is set for 2 p.m., on Wednesday. TU then finishes C-USA play with a three-game series against Memphis on Saturday. All five games will be played at the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on the TU campus.
