ST. GEORGE, Utah - Junior Jordan Kinard pitched 6.0 shutout innings in relief Sunday, striking out 10 batters in The University of Tulsa's 6-5 loss to Utah at the Red Desert Classic at the Canyons Softball Complex.

The Golden Hurricane (2-3) scored five runs on five hits, while the Utes (5-0) scored six runs on five hits. TU scored two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh, but was unable to overcome Utah's five-run first inning and an additional run in the second.

Kinard entered the game in the second inning and shut down the Utes, allowing just one hit in her relief appearance. Freshman starter Kalynn Schrock (1-1) absorbed the loss, and Utah starter Ashley Smuda (5-0) picked up the win pitching 6.0 innings. All of Tulsa's damage was done off Utah reliever Brittany Parker.

Five individual Hurricane players picked up one hit in the game. Freshman shortstop Samantha Cobb got a single and an RBI and scored twice. Senior first baseman Vanessa Vice and sophomore Skylar Swanson each drove home a run, while senior catcher Christian Timmons had two RBI on two groundouts. Senior right fielder Lauren Lindsay, freshman third baseman Cassidy Bowen and junior designated player Lauren Menke each scored one run.

Utah scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning on two singles and with the aid of three walks and an error. The Utes scored one more in the second on consecutive doubles to take a 6-0 lead.

Tulsa mustered just three base runners and two hits in the first five innings, but its scoring exploded in the final two frames. In the sixth, TU drew five walks and scored two runs. Cobb crossed the plate on a Timmons ground out, and Bowen scored when Everett drew a bases-loaded walk.

Menke led off the seventh inning with a walk and Lindsay, Cobb and pinch-hitter Keri Leach followed with three straight singles. Cobb's base hit into left field scored Menke from second base. Vice hit into a fielder's choice to score Lindsay, and Cobb scored on Timmons' ground out, giving TU its final run in the game.

The Golden Hurricane returns to action next weekend, Feb. 19-21, when it travels to the Baylor QTI Getterman Classic. TU opens the tournament Friday with a game at 10 a.m. against Texas-Arlington and a game at 1 p.m. against Wichita State.

TU plays host to two tournaments, the first coming Feb. 26-28, and the second on March 5-7, at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
