WACO, Texas - The University of Tulsa softball team dropped two games - 9-5 to UTEP and 9-1 to Baylor - Saturday afternoon in the QTI Getterman Classic.

Senior first baseman Vanessa Vice tallied four hits and a run, and freshman center fielder Caitlin Everett had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Golden Hurricane (3-6). Against UTEP, Tulsa scored five runs on nine hits and committed two errors, while the Miners scored nine runs on 13 hits and had three errors. In the second game against Baylor, TU scored one run on five hits, while the Bears scored nine runs on 11 hits.

"We're trying to get some young players to adjust to the speed of the game," Tulsa head coach John Bargfeldt said. "We thought pitching would be a strength, but it just hasn't come through yet. Our pitching and our defense need to be more consistent. We just need to get back to where we can rely on our solid pitching, which hasn't been all that solid yet."

In game one, UTEP scored one run in the second and third innings on RBI singles, but Tulsa came back with a big five-run fourth inning. Sophomore second baseman Skylar Swanson earned a one-out walk, and Vice singled to left center field. A two-out walk to freshman left fielder Keri Leach loaded the bases, and senior catcher Christian Timmons followed with another walk that plated Swanson.

Vice and Leach scored on consecutive illegal pitches, and Everett hit an RBI single up the middle to drive home Timmons for the fourth run of the inning. Junior designated player Mickey LaValley gave Tulsa a 5-2 lead with a base hit into left field, scoring Everett.

The Hurricane was held to four scattered hits the rest of the way, and could muster no more runs.

UTEP took the lead in the top of the fifth with five runs of its own, driven by a three-run home run and two RBI singles. The Miners finished with two runs in the sixth inning with three straight hits - a double sandwiched by two singles.

Junior Jordan Kinard (1-2) took the loss after allowing eight hits and seven runs, five of which were earned, four walks and seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Senior Jackie Lawrence came on in relief in the fifth and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and five strikeouts.

Baylor 9, Tulsa 1 (5 Innings)

Baylor defeated Tulsa, 9-1, in five innings in TU's second game of the day. Junior third baseman Kelly Chapman went 2-for-2 and scored the team's only run, while senior right fielder Lauren Lindsay went 1-for-3 with the RBI. Lindsay drove Chapman home with a double to right center field in the third inning after Chapman reached base on a double to right center.

Baylor jumped out to an 8-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and two in the third. The Bears also scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead, and the game ended in the fifth by run rule. Baylor scored its runs on a three-run homer in the second, as well as three one-run singles, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Kalynn Schrock (2-2) pitched all 4.0 innings and absorbed the loss.

The Golden Hurricane closes out the tournament with an 11 a.m. Sunday game against Central Arkansas. Live stats will be available at www.TulsaHurricane.com.

TU plays host to two tournaments - the Tulsa Embassy Suites Invitational on Feb. 26-28, and the Tulsa Embassy Suites Festival on March 5-7, at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
