BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Tulsa softball team scored in each of the first three innings and got a strong pitching performance from Jordan Kinard to defeat UAB, 4-1, in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon at the UAB Softball Field.
The Golden Hurricane (14-10, 2-1 C-USA) scored two runs in the first inning and one in each of the second and third innings. With Kinard (5-3) in the circle, the four runs proved to be an insurmountable lead for TU. UAB fell to 15-7 overall and 1-2 in C-USA play.
Shortstop Samantha Cobb went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, designated player Lauren Menke blasted a solo home run, and center fielder Caitlin Everett got two hits and scored a run.
Kinard scattered five hits, struck out five and walked three batters in a complete-game effort. The Hurricane scored four runs on six hits and committed one error, and the Blazers scored one run on five hits with one error.
"We got a couple of good wins for our confidence, winning two of three on the road," Tulsa head coach John Bargfeldt said. "Jordan did a great job today of attacking the zone with pitcher's pitches.
"We played three hard-fought games. Any of the games could have gone any way. It's hard to win on the road and winning two of three to start conference play is big. I'm pretty pleased. I don't think we had our "A" hitting game this weekend, but our hitters came through when they needed to. We went through a lot of conditions - it was windy, chilly, and rainy off and on all weekend - and to come out winning two of three is a pretty good accomplishment."
Tulsa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Everett led off with a bunt single and Cobb doubled down the left field line to drive her home. First baseman Vanessa Vice reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and Cobb scored on the play.
In the second inning, left fielder Jessica Stoelke was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Stoelke moved to third on a two-out single by Everett and after a walk to right fielder Lauren Lindsay, Cobb singled through the left side to score Stoelke.
The Golden Hurricane capped its scoring in the third inning when Menke went deep on a 1-0 pitch, giving TU a 4-0 lead.
UAB picked up its only run with an RBI single following a one-out double in the sixth inning.
For the most part, Kinard scattered five hits and three walks among the other six innings, with the back-to-back hits in the sixth the only cluster the Blazers managed.
The Golden Hurricane heads to Atlanta for a two-game set against Mercer and Georgia State. TU plays Mercer at 1 p.m. and Georgia State at 5 p.m.
Tickets for all Tulsa softball home games are $6 for adults and $4 for youth. Tickets can be purchased at the TU Athletics Ticket Office, by calling 631-GoTU (4688), or at the gate.
