Tulsa Plays Host to UAB Saturday

Sophomore point guard Bryson Pope leads the Golden Hurricane against C-USA-leading UAB Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa basketball team returns to Conference USA action when it takes on league-leading UAB Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

The Golden Hurricane, which has won four straight home games, enters the game with an 8-8 record overall and a 1-1 mark in C-USA play. The Blazers (11-3, 1-0 C-USA) have won five of their last six games overall, before having its game Wednesday at East Carolina postponed due to weather in the Southeast. The game will be broadcast on the Golden Hurricane Radio Network, which in Tulsa is KRMG AM 740/102.3 FM. Live audio and video will also be available via Hurricane Vision on www.tulsahurricane.com.

Tulsa averages 72.5 points per game while allowing 70.1 points per game. The Golden Hurricane shoots 44 percent from the floor and allows opponents 42 percent shooting. TU out-rebounds foes, 36.2-32.8 rebounds per contest. The Hurricane also shoots 36 percent from three-point territory and has a .723 free-throw percentage.

Four TU players average more than 10.0 points per game this season. Justin Hurtt ranks second in C-USA and ranks 15th in the nation with 21.1 points per game. Steven Idlet averages 13.6 ppg, Scottie Haralson averages 12.8 ppg and Jordan Clarkson averages 11.1 ppg. Idlet shoots 50 percent from the floor, and Hurtt averages 43 percent from the floor and 89 percent shooting from the free throw. Idlet and Joe Richard lead TU with 6.1 and 5.8 rebounds per game, respectively. Hurtt leads the Hurricane with 42 assists (2.6 apg), Pope has 31 assists (1.9 apg) and Clarkson has 23 assists (1.9 apg).

UAB averages 72.6 points per game and 36.8 rebounds per game. The Blazers shoot 46 percent from the field, have a .363 three-point percentage, and shoot 74 percent from the free throw line. UAB opponents average 63.2 points per game, a .398 field-goal percentage, .290 percent from long range, and 35.5 rebounds per game. The Blazers are led in scoring by guard Jamarr Sanders, who averages 17.6 points and 4.6 rebounds, and center Cameron Moore, who averages 17.5 ppg and 9.9 rpg, shooting 53 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three-point range. Guard Aaron Johnson averages 10.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 8.6 assists per game, while forward Ovie Soko averaged 9.4 ppg and 5.4 rpg.

This is the 13th meeting between Tulsa and UAB. The series is tied 6-6. The Hurricane is 3-1 at home, while UAB leads the series 5-0 in Birmingham. Tulsa has a 3-0 record at a neutral site, including two wins in Memphis at the Conference USA Tournament, one coming on March 13, 2008 in overtime 78-68, and a year later on March 13, 2009 by a score of 70-67. Tulsa had won three straight games before UAB claimed a 65-55 home win last year.
