DALLAS, Texas - The Tulsa basketball team is in Dallas today to take on SMU, and will try to avenge for a last-second defeat at home last month, at 2 p.m. at Moody Coliseum.
The Golden Hurricane (14-11, 7-4 C-USA), winners of four of its last five games since it last played the Mustangs (16-9, 7-4 C-USA), and has won two of its last three road contests. On Jan. 26, SMU made a three-pointer with one second on the clock to defeat TU, 59-58.
The game will be broadcast on the Golden Hurricane Radio Network, which in Tulsa is KRMG AM 740/102.3 FM. Live video and audio will also be available via Hurricane Vision on www.tulsahurricane.com.
Tulsa averages 71.0 points per game while al¬lowing 67.8 points per game. The Golden Hurricane shoots 44 percent from the floor and allows opponents 42 percent shooting. TU out-rebounds foes, 37.6-31.5 rebounds per contest. The Hurricane also shoots 36 percent from three-point territory and has a .696 free-throw percentage.
Four TU players average more than 10.0 points per game this season. Justin Hurtt leads C-USA and ranks 21st in the nation with 20.3 points per game. Steven Idlet averages 12.5 ppg and Scottie Haralson averages 12.4 ppg, while Jordan Clarkson averages 10.3 ppg. Idlet shoots 52 percent from the floor, and Hurtt averages 85 percent shooting from the free throw line. Idlet and Joe Richard lead TU with 6.9 and 6.0 rebounds per game, respectively. Hurtt leads the Hurricane with 64 assists (2.6 apg), while Pope has 61 assists (2.4 apg) and Clarkson has 44 assists (2.1 apg).
SMU averages 66.3 points per game and 27.0 rebounds per game. The Mustangs shoot 49 percent from the field, have a .406 three-point percentage, and .751 free throw percentage. SMU opponents average 61.4 points per game, a .430 field-goal percentage, .396 percent from long range, and 30.5 rebounds per game. The Mustangs are led in scoring by forward Papa Dia, who averages 18.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. Forward Robert Nyakundi, averages 15.5 ppg and 4.4 rpg, and has made 74 three-pointers. Guard Jere Samarrippas averages 7.2 ppg and leads the team with 89 assists (3.6 apg).
This is the 40th meeting between Tulsa and SMU. The Golden Hurricane leads the series 27-12. Tulsa has won 10 of the last 11 games, all under Doug Wojcik as the Hurricane head coach. SMU won the first meeting this season, 59-58, in Tulsa on a three-pointer with one second left on the clock. The Hurricane won the previous 10 games by a 7.4 average. Tulsa won both games a year ago with a 58-55 win in Tulsa and a 63-56 victory on the road. Tulsa has posted an overall 15-6 mark in road games against the Mustangs.
