LAWRENCE, Kan. - Lacey Middlebrooks and Jordan Kinard combined for a shutout and Kelly Chapman drove in two runs to lead the Tulsa softball team to a 3-0 game-one win over Kansas Wednesday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
Middlebrooks (10-4) pitched four strong innings, striking out three batters and allowing three hits, but no runs, before giving way to Kinard. The senior hurler tossed the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters to pick up her second save of the season.
Tulsa got on the board in the top of the second inning when Kelly Chapman singled past the third baseman and the ball squeaked past the left fielder, allowing Lauren Menke to score on the play.
Middlebrooks got out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the third inning with three straight fielder's choice ground outs by the two, three and four-hole hitters in the lineup. On two of the plays, Barrett and Middlebrooks had to charge the ball and make a running throw to Cassidy Bowen at the plate.
The Golden Hurricane extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair runs in the sixth inning. Chapman once again provided the igniting single, this time earning two RBI with a single up the middle. The base hit scored Keri Leach, who pinch ran for Menke following a hit up the middle, and Shelby Blanton, who reached on a fielding error to second base. An infield single by Bowen loaded the bases to set up Chapman's two-run hit.
After allowing a walk and a single to begin the bottom of the sixth, Kinard got two strikeouts sandwiched around a fly out to right center field to end the inning.
