TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa softball team was chosen as the favorite to repeat as Conference USA Champions, and sophomore Aimee Creger was tabbed as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year - one of four Hurricane players on the preseason all-conference team - as voted by the league's coaches, the C-USA office announced Wednesday.
Joining Creger on the Preseason All-C-USA Team is junior shortstop Samantha Cobb, junior center fielder Caitlin Everett and sophomore third baseman Jill Barrett.
The Golden Hurricane, which ended the 2011 season as one of five C-USA schools to earn NCAA bids, is ranked No. 24 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll. TU finished last season with a 46-15 overall record and a 19-5 mark in C-USA play, taking home its third C-USA regular season title.
Creger, the 2011 C-USA Freshman of the Year, was also a First-Team All-C-USA pitcher and an NFCA Third-Team All-America selection. She posted a 24-3 record, with a 1.05 ERA, a .141 opponent batting average and 256 strikeouts in 193.0 innings.
Everett was also a First-Team All-C-USA as well as an NFCA All-Midwest Region selection. She set school records with 79 hits, a .407 batting average and 35 stolen bases, and scored 37 runs. Cobb was a First-Team All-C-USA selection after hitting .342 with 51 RBI, 32 runs scored, a .524 slugging percentage and a .397 on-base percentage. Barrett was a Second-Team All-C-USA selection after batting .296 overall, including .376 in league play, with 39 runs scored. Cobb and Barrett teamed up to provide a superb defensive left side of the infield for the Hurricane.
Tulsa opens the 2012 season Feb. 10-12 at the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics, as it faces Rutgers, Mississippi Valley State and host No. 23 ULL in the tournament. The Golden Hurricane then plays at the Aggie Classic Feb. 17-19, hosted by No. 17 Texas A&M, and the FAU "Strike Out Cancer" Tournament, Feb. 24-26. TU opens its home schedule with the Hyatt Downtown Tulsa Tournament, March 2-4, featuring North Texas, Austin Peay, and Loyola Chicago.
