Tulsa Splits Saturday at the Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. - The 24th-ranked Tulsa softball team split the first day of the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics at Lamson Park, defeating Mississippi Valley State, 11-3, and falling to No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette, 19-4.
Sophomore shortstop Samantha Cobb went 5-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader to lead the Golden Hurricane (1-1).
Tulsa closes out the Louisiana Classics with a game against Rutgers at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Cobb was 4-for-4 in the nightcap with an RBI and a pair of runs. Freshman catcher Amy Harrison knocked her first career home run and drove in four runs. Junior Lacey Middlebrooks (1-0) pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing two earned runs. s After dropping the opener to ULL, Tulsa allowed two runs in the bottom of the first inning to the Delta Devils, and fell behind 3-1 after two frames, but came back with four runs in the top of the third.
In the second inning, junior center fielder Caitlin Everett drew a bases-loaded walk to score sophomore second baseman Shelby Blanton, who reached on a double.
Cobb got things started in the third inning with a single to short, senior first baseman Skylar Swanson reached on an error and freshman designated player Julie Kernen reached on a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. Senior right fielder Jessica Stoelke hit into a fielder's choice that resulted in an error by the third baseman, allowing Cobb to score. Harrison then followed with a three-run blast to center field, giving TU a 5-3 lead.
The Hurricane scored in each of the final six inning, putting up two runs in the fourth and sixth frames, and one run each in the fifth and seventh stanzas.
Everett and sophomore third baseman Jill Barrett led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles and Cobb loaded the bases with a walk. Everett scored on a walk by Swanson and Kernen hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Barrett.
Cobb hit a two-out single down the left field line in the fifth to score sophomore left fielder Cierra Hughes, who had singled to right center.
Tulsa strung two doubles and two singles together to produce a pair of scores in the sixth inning. With one out, Blanton doubled to right center and Stoelke followed with a single to right field. Harrison drove home Blanton with a base hit through the left side, and with two outs Everett doubled to right center, plating Stoelke.
The final run was scored on a Blanton base hit to center field, driving home Cobb, who led off the seventh with a single up the middle.
Harrison finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and the homer, and Blanton was 3-for-5, drove in a run and scored twice. Everett was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. TU totaled 14 hits.
Mississippi Valley State starter Kimberly Spivey (0-1) took the loss for the Delta Devils after allowing seven runs and three earned runs in 3.0 innings. Five MVSU players got one hit, and Kishti Kamaka had the team's only RBI in the contest.

Sophomore shortstop Samantha Cobb hit a two-run home run, but Tulsa fell at ULL, 19-4, in the season opener.
