BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lacey Middlebrooks pitched a complete-game win and totaled five RBI to lead the Tulsa softball team to 9-0 win over Loyola Marymount and a 4-1 defeat of FIU Friday at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament at the FAU Softball Complex.
Middlebrooks (3-1) struck out six batters and allowed just four hits to earn the win in the second game against FIU. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three of the four runs for the Golden Hurricane (7-2). Mariah Dawson (4-2) took the loss for the Panthers (6-5) after allowing three runs in 5.0 innings.
FIU got on the board first with a leadoff home run by right fielder Ashley McClain in the top of the first inning.
Middlebrooks and the TU defense shut down the Panthers after that homer. The junior pitcher allowed just three hits and two walks for the rest of the game. FIU did load the bases with no outs in the third inning, but Middlebrooks coaxed a fielder's choice ground out and two called strikeouts to end the threat. FIU only moved one runner to second base for the remainder of the game.
Tulsa took a turn through the lineup to hit Dawson, who was perfect through the first three innings. A Middlebrooks single to right field in the bottom of the fourth drove home sophomore third baseman Jill Barrett and junior shortstop Samantha Cobb to give TU a 2-1 lead. Barrett singled and Cobb reached on a fielder's choice.
Sophomore left fielder Shelby Blanton led off the fifth inning with a single and scored on a two-out base hit to right by sophomore right fielder Cierra Hughes.
Middlebrooks picked up a little more insurance when she drove in the final Hurricane run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field. The hit scored Cobb, who walked and moved to second base on a passed ball.
Tulsa 9, Loyola Marymount 0 (5 inn.)
Four players recorded multiple RBI and Aimee Creger pitched a three-hit shutout as Tulsa opened the tournament with a 9-0 (5 inn.) win over Loyola Marymount.
Samantha Cobb tallied three RBI, while Caitlin Everett, Skylar Swanson and Lacey Middlebrooks each drove in two runs for TU.
