Big Innings Help Softball Take Doubleheader at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulsa used big offensive innings to take the doubleheader at Southern Miss, 13-8 and 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 21-6 overall and 7-1 in C-USA play, clinching the series win. Southern Miss fell to 10-16 overall and 2-6 in league play. The series finale is Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
TU scored 13 runs on 14 hits to win game one. Designated player Lacey Middlebrooks had four RBI on three hits and combined with first baseman Skylar Swanson (three RBI) and shortstop Samantha Cobb (two RBI) to drive in nine runs for the Golden Hurricane.
In game two, Middlebrooks (7-2) allowed no hits through five innings, and ended the game with eight strikeouts, allowing just three hits in a complete-game effort. Swanson and Cobb combined for five of the six RBI, and center fielder Caitlin Everett and third baseman Jill Barrett combined for four runs scored.
TU got on the board with four runs in the third fueled by a three-run home run by Swanson. Everett got it started with a one-out walk, and Barrett and Cobb followed with back-to-back singles down the left field line to score Everett. Swanson's homer gave TU the 4-0 lead.
The Hurricane added two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-1. Everett and Barrett hit consecutive singles, and Cobb singled to score Everett. After a line out and a fly out, left fielder Shelby Blanton singled to plate Barrett.
Middlebrooks allowed one walk through five innings. USM's first hit came on a double by third baseman Chanell Thurman with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The Golden Eagles used a pair of singles, a walk, and an RBI ground out by second baseman Britney Dinelt to score its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tulsa 13, Southern Miss 8
Tulsa scored 13 runs on 14 hits to win game one over Southern Miss, 13-8. Lacey Middlebrooks had four RBI on three hits and combined with Skylar Swanson and Samantha Cobb to drive in nine runs for the Golden Hurricane. Caitlin Everett had four hits, and along with third baseman Jill Barrett and Cobb, scored three runs.
