HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Tulsa softball team won game two at Marshall, 1-0, after falling, 6-0, in game one to split the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.
Lacey Middlebrooks (12-3) struck out seven batters and earned the complete-game shutout in the game-two win. She also singled in the only run of the game for the Golden Hurricane (28-9, 11-3 C-USA). Natalee Pulver (6-6) pitched a complete game in the loss for the Thundering Herd (25-17, 11-6 C-USA).
Marshall homered twice in game one and got a complete-game shutout from Andi Williamson (16-10) to earn the win. First baseman Shelby Blanton and center fielder Caitlin Everett led the Golden Hurricane with two hits apiece. Aimee Creger (13-4) took the loss for Tulsa.
The series finale is Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
"We had a lot of opportunities in game one," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "A lot of times during the year we come up with big hits, and we didn't do it today. At times it was credit to their pitcher or their defense, and others we hit the ball hard right at people. We missed our spots twice and they took advantage of it. Our hitters started pressing when we weren't hitting. Some of that carried over into the second game. Our hitters were feeling the pressure not getting that hit, until the seventh inning when we were able to score."
Tulsa got a baserunner in each of the first, second and fourth innings of game two, but could not advance past first base until the final frame.
Middlebrooks, meanwhile, retired the first nine batters she faced, before shortstop Alianna Telles singled to lead off the fourth inning. TU, however, turned a 5-3 line-out double play and the junior hurler faced the minimum through 4.2 innings. The Herd got a single and fielder's choice in the fifth inning, and a walk in the seventh, but no runners reached second base in the game.
TU won in its final at-bat for the ninth time this season. Third baseman Jill Barrett, who was 2-for-3 in the game, and shortstop Samantha Cobb led off the top of the seventh with consecutive singles. Barrett was caught stealing at third and Cobb moved up to second on the plat, and then to third on a fielder's choice ground out by first baseman Skylar Swanson. Middlebrooks then singled through the right side, driving home Cobb for what turned out to be the winning run.
Barrett got a hit in each of the two games, to extend her hitting streak to 18 games. She is two games shy of the school-record set by Julie Shafer in 2005-06.
Marshall 6, Tulsa 0
Andi Williamson pitched a complete-game and Marshall hit two home runs to win game one, 6-0. Jill Barrett, Shelby Blanton and Caitlin Everett each had two hits for Tulsa.
