It's a clear and warm day for football in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane hosts Tulsa alumnus Todd Berry, class of 1983, and his ULM Warhawks team today at 5:04 p.m. at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Tulsa and ULM are both looking to snap two-game losing streaks in the final non-conference match-up for the Hurricane.
Both teams will be without offensive weapons. Tulsa lost junior receiver Keevan Lucas for the season with a knee injury last week against Houston. Lucas caught 26 passes for 409 yards and five touchdowns before the injury. ULM is also without its' second-leading receiver, as Rashon Ceaser is sidelined after grabbing 26 passes for 272 yards and two TDs in the first three games.
Tulsa's Dane Evans, who has completed 61.4-percent of his passes, still has leading target Keyarris Garrett. Evans has completed 97 passes for 1,498 yards and eight touchdowns, while 33 of those passes have gone to Garrett for 539 yards. Josh Atkinson, who is on a streak of three straight 100-yard receiving games, has caught 19 of Evans' passes for 330 yards and has scored twice.
With Lucas' absence, players like senior Connor Floyd, who has 10 catches for 111 yards, red-shirt freshman Justin Hobbs and sophomores Bishop Louie and Nigel Carter may get more looks in the receiving game.
Tulsa's ground attack is led by Zack Langer and D'Angelo Brewer, who have combined for 722 rushing yards and nine TDs.
Tulsa's offense will face a ULM defensive unit that has gone up against nationally-ranked Georgia and Alabama. The Warhawks defense has held its opponents to just 375.2 yards per game, including 249 rushing and 127 through the air. ULM's defense is led by linebacker Michael Johnson and his 26 stops this year, while nose tackle Gerrand Johnson anchors the front line of the Warhawks 3-4 defense and is second in tackles with 20 stops on the year. Cornerback Trey Caldwell headlines the ULM secondary with 17 tackles.
On offense, ULM has put up an average of 304 yards per game in its first four games, throwing for 228.0 yards and running for 75.8 yards. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Garrett Smith has completed 64-percent of his passes for 882 yards and eight touchdowns and is second in rushing for the Warhawks.
Smith's favorite target is Ajalen Holley, who has caught 28 passes for 467 yards and two touchdowns. The ULM tight ends are also involved in the Warhawks passing game, as the top two have combined for nine receptions and two TDs.
The Warhawks' running game is led by Ben Luckett's 100 yards and 5.0 average per carry, while the QB Garrett and backup running back Kaylon Watson have gained 99 and 82 yards, respectively.
The Hurricane defense, although giving up 591 yards per game, has held the opposition to 39-percent conversion on third downs and a 65-percent touchdown conversion in the red zone.
Safety Michael Mudoh ranks second in the nation for tackles with 49 on the year, while linebackers Matt Linscott and Trent Martin are next with 41 and 35 stops, respectively. Linscott has a team-high 8.5 tackles for lost yardage.
The Hurricane front line is led by senior tackle Derrick Luetjen, who has recorded 19 tackles and three TFLs, and fellow senior end Derrick Alexander, who has 13 stops and two fumble recoveries.
