Kernen Earns American Softball Player of the Week Honor

Senior Julie Kernen was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.Feb. 16, 2015

TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa senior Julie Kernen hit .571 with eight RBI, two home runs and a 1.143 slugging percentage last weekend, and was named the American Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Kernen, a first baseman from St. Louis, Mo., went 8-for-14 at the plate with four extra base hits, scored two runs and compiled a .611 on-base percentage to lead the Golden Hurricane offense in a 3-2 weekend at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament.

In Tulsa's 1-0 win over Maryland on Saturday, Kernen drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Sunday against Providence, she went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBI. She hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs against Drexel on Saturday, and went 2-for-3 with a double in the opener against Michigan State on Friday.

Kernen is the second TU player to earn American Conference Player of the Week honors in the first two weeks of the season. Fellow senior Erica Sampson won the award on Feb. 9.

The Golden Hurricane (7-3) returns to action this weekend, Feb. 20-22, at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. TU will face No. 2 Oregon, No. 9 Baylor, North Texas and Abilene Christian.
