Softball Opens American Athletic Conference Play vs. Memphis

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa softball team opens American Athletic Conference play for the first time when it plays host to Memphis this weekend for a three-game series at the Collins Family Softball Complex. The teams play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, and a single game at noon Sunday.

The Golden Hurricane (16-10, 0-0 American) is playing its first softball season as a member of The American Conference. The Hurricane is 5-3 in its last eight games, and is coming off a 7-6 defeat to Iowa on Wednesday. The Tigers are 9-12 this season, and have won two in a row after dropping four straight.

Tulsa is led by senior Julie Kernen, who hits .390 with 36 RBI, seven home runs, 10 doubles and 17 runs scored. Senior Erica Sampson hits .345 with 33 runs, 16 RBI and 10 extra base hits. Sophomore Brittany Walker is hitting .467 with 21 RBI, 13 runs, a .844 slugging percentage and eight extra base hits. Sophomore Maggie Withee hits .325 and has scored 23 runs, and junior Kaitlin Allen hits .338 with seven RBI and nine runs.

In the circle, freshman Emily Watson leads the Hurricane with a 2.28 ERA. She is 4-2 with two shutouts, 44 strikeouts to 11 walks, and has allowed 39 hits and 13 earned runs in 40.0 innings. Senior Bailey Erwin is 8-4 with a 2.99 ERA in 14 appearances and 11 starts. She has 65 strikeouts to 16 walks, and has allowed 71 hits and 29 earned runs in 68.0 innings.
