Senior Kernen and junior Horner named to Mideast Region Third Team
TULSA, Okla. – University of Tulsa senior first baseman Julie Kernen and junior catcher Catherine Horner were selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Mideast Region Third Team, the organization announced Thursday.
Horner earned NFCA all-region honors for the second straight year, while Kernen picked up her first all-region award.
Kernen, a native of St. Louis, Mo., set a school record with 59 RBI this season, and led the Golden Hurricane with 27 extra base hits, including 12 home runs and 15 doubles. She hit .331 with a team-high .639 slugging percentage, and added 39 runs, 22 walks and a .421 on-base percentage. She also led TU with 16 multiple RBI games and tallied 13 multiple hit games this season. Kernen finished her career ranking among the top-10 in 11 career categories at Tulsa, and was just the third TU player to record 25 home runs, 40 doubles and 145 RBI in her career. She was also a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection this season, and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team.
Horner, a native of La Canada, Calif., compiled 27 RBI, 36 runs and 18 extra base hits, including 12 doubles, four triples and two home runs. She drew a team-high 33 walks, and batted .267 with a .440 slugging and a .392 on-base percentage. Defensively, she caught 14 runners stealing in 36 attempts. She tallied eight multiple RBI games and nine multi-hit contests. Horner was a first-team All-Mideast Region selection in 2014, and also a second-team All-American Athletic Conference selection this season.
