
Tulsa Takes Down Tulane 50-27

James Flanders rushed for a career-high 190 yards and Josh Atkinson tallied a career-high 142 receiving yards to lead Tulsa to a 50-27 Homecoming victory over Tulane Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 22,349.
Flanders ran for two touchdowns and Atkinson caught one of quarterback Dane Evans' three touchdown passes. Evans completed 14 of 23 passes for 236 yards, as the Golden Hurricane improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
Senior Keevan Lucas had three catches for 67 yards and a score, and senior running back D'Angelo Brewer caught two passes, including a five-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Brewer rushed for 67 yards on 18 carries, and junior Rowdy Simon ran for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman linebacker Cooper Edmiston and sophomore safety McKinley Whitfield each made their first career start, and led the Hurricane with nine and eight tackles, respectively. Whitfield intercepted a two-point conversion pass and returned it for a defensive PAT and two points.
Tulane running back Josh Rounds finished with 166 yards and a touchdown, and Dontrell Hilliard tallied 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as the Green Wave fell to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in The American.
Tulsa scored on the game's opening position and after Tulane knotted the score at seven, the Hurricane proceeded to tally 24 consecutive points to take a 31-7 advantage into halftime.
After halftime, the Hurricane defense held Tulane to a 3-and-out and a missed field goal. Tulsa scored the first second-half points to go ahead 38-7 when Rowdy Simon raced 16 yards at the 8:54 mark of the third period, capping a seven-play, 80-yard drive.
Tulane scored its second touchdown of the game at the 2:10 mark of the third quarter when the Green Wave marched 70 yards in nine plays, taking 3:04 of the clock, as Lazedrick Thompson scored from five yards out. After a Tulsa fumble, Tulane went 38 yards in three plays as Dontrell Hilliard's 30-yard run made the score 38-20. Tulane's 2-point conversion pass attempt was intercepted by Whitfield and returned 100 yards for a 40-20 Hurricane lead.
On the ensuing possession, the Hurricane marched 72 yards on six plays to take a 47-20 lead, as 62 of those yards came off the running of Flanders. He took his fourth carry of the drive the final 30 yards for the Tulsa touchdown.
The Hurricane hit the 50-point plateau on a 27-yard field goal, capping a five-play, 41-yard drive. Tulane scored on the subsequent possession, going 90 yards in five plays to make the score 50-27 with 5:07 remaining in the game.
Tulane fell to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in American Athletic Conference play.
Tulsa scored on the opening drive of the game, going 75 yards in 10 plays as Dane Evans threw the final 11 yards to Dane Evans, taking 2:13 off the game clock.
Dontrell Hilliard's six-yard TD run capped a 56-yard, five-play drive that was kept alive with a defensive off-sides call on 3rd-and-8 from the 23-yard line, to make it 3rd-and 3 for the Green Wave, thus tying the score at 7-7.
On the next possession, the Hurricane went ahead 14-7 when Evans connected with Josh Atkinson on a 49-yard pass, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive in just 2:01.
After recovering a fumble on a muffed punt at the Tulane 6-yard line, recovered by Sam Gottsch, the Hurricane offense pushed it across the goal line in three plays, as Evans threw his third TD of the game and first to D'Angelo Brewer, to give Tulsa a 21-7 lead.
Tulsa added three points on an 80-yard, nine-play drive when the Hurricane possession stalled at the one-yard line. Redford Jones kicked through a 20-yarder to give Tulsa a 24-7 lead with 7:05 remaining in the first half. After the Tulsa defense stopped Tulane to a 3-and-out, the Hurricane offense went 52 yards in eight plays as James Flanders ran the final six yards on a 3rd-and-Goal for a touchdown and a 31-7 lead after the PAT.
At halftime, Tulsa gained 323 yards with 209 through the air and 114 yards on the ground, while holding the Green Wave to 113 total yards. Evans completed 11-of-16 first-half passes for 209 yards and three TDs, while Atkinson had a team-best 132 yards on six receptions.
The Golden Hurricane goes back on the road next week to face the Memphis Tigers in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Liberty Bowl Stadium.
