TULSA, Okla. – Junior guard Corey Henderson Jr. scored 20 points and junior guard Jaleel Wheeler added 17 as "Tulsa Black" earned a 58-54 win over "Tulsa Blue" in the first public scrimmage of the season for Frank Haith's restocked Tulsa basketball roster.
Â
Henderson, a transfer from Blinn Community College, did much of his damage at the free throw line, hitting 10-of-11 charity shots, including four consecutive makes in the final seconds to seal the win.
Â
The Golden Hurricane showed a strong presence on the offensive glass, collecting 20 offensive rebounds between the two teams. Junior forward TK Edogi grabbed six of those offensive boards and narrowly missed a double-double for Tulsa Blue with 19 points and nine rebounds. Four of Edogi's eight field goals (8-of-13 FGs) were dunks, including a transition flush and a reverse dunk on an alley-oop feed from sophomore forward Geno Artison.
Â
"It was a new test for our guys," Head Coach Frank Haith said. "It was the first time they got up and down and played in front of our fans. We had a great turnout tonight before the football game. I appreciate so many folks getting here early and stopping by to see our new team. This is going to be a fun group that our fans will get to watch grow for the next few years."
Â
Junior forward Junior Etou also reached double figures for Tulsa Black. The Rutgers transfer scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Â
"It was an abbreviated scrimmage, but there were really a lot of bright spots for our team," Haith said. "I liked how hard our guys played and I liked how virtually everyone contributed."
Â
Tulsa Basketball opens its 2016-17 exhibition season on Nov. 2 at Donald W. Reynolds Center against Oklahoma Christian. The regular season tips-off on Nov. 11 at home against Jacksonville State.
